Reggae Revelry

Happy love month folks! Andddd happy Reggae Month!!

Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post, I just really love my little big island and will always promote it

Reggae Month began in 2008 and is the annual celebration of Jamaica’s greatest export and its local and worldwide impact. The Proclamation which officially declared February Reggae Month was read on January 24th 2008 by His Excellency Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, the then Governor General of Jamaica, at an official ceremony at the Kings House. The month of February was chosen as it is also Black History Month, as well as the birth-month of reggae icons Dennis Brown and Bob Marley.

Throughout the month there are a variety of events held across the island, although the main celebrations take place in Kingston and Negril. Events include live concerts, tributes to reggae icons, talks and discussions held by JaRIA (Jamaica Reggae Industry Association), and the Reggae Gold Awards. This year’s Reggae Month also includes the inaugural Dancehall Week (12-19th), featuring a dancehall parade through the streets of Kingston on the 18th.

The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport have a developed an app to help folks keep up-to-date with what’s going on throughout the month. Download the Jamaica Reggae App on GooglePlay or the App Store.

Reggae and love

Reggae is known as the sound of resistance and rebellion, but it’s also the soundtrack of love. Freddie McGregor, Beres Hammond, Delroy Wilson, Sanchez and many more have been sponsoring first dances for decades. Their ability to narrate love so beautifully is unmatched (in my humble opinion).

Here is my favourite reggae love song by my favourite reggae artist, enjoy!

Until next time,

Ri x
