The real untold islands

I feel like it’s only right that on this blog titled ‘the islands untold’ that we explore some islands that may be lesser known.

There are thousands of islands in the Caribbean region, many are grouped together (St Vincent & the Grenadines for example). Here are 5 islands you should consider visiting, even if it’s just for a day trip.

Saba

Saba is located 28 miles from the island of Sint Maarten – 12 mins by air, 90 by ferry. Like other islands in the Lesser Antilles, it is a municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It homes the Mount Scenery volcano, which although it hasn’t erupted since the 1600s, is still considered to be active and a possible threat

Things to do on Saba:
  • Cloud Forest Hike
  • Saba Marine Park
  • Museums – Saba Heritage Museum, Major Osman R. Simmons Museum, Harry L. Johnson Museum

Bequia

“Everybody dreams ah fi go England, my dream’s ah go Bequia!” – OG Park, 2023

Located 9 miles from mainland St Vincent, Bequia is SVG’s 2nd biggest island. It is its own little paradise, with no traffic lights, mega-resorts or even a daily newspaper. Bequia is definitely the place to reset and enjoy the quiet life – even just for a few hours.

Things to do on Bequia:
  • Bequia Heritage Museum
  • Island tour
  • Model boat building
  • Moonhole – private nature reserve

Nevis

A short 20 minute water taxi ride from St Kitts, Nevis is a beautiful hidden treasure. Originally named ‘Oualie’ meaning land of beautiful waters, that’s exactly what the island has to offer

Things to do on Nevis:
  • Mango Festival
  • Nevis hot springs
  • Nevisian Heritage Village
  • The Botanical Gardens of Nevis

Petite Martinique

Petite Martinique is a unique place. Despite being its own island, it is formally labelled a parish of Grenada with Carriacou. However, it is very much its own entity with lots to see and experience! It’s only a 2 hour ferry ride from mainland Grenada, so if you jump on the 9am ferry you’ll be able to enjoy a full day before getting the 5pm one back.

Things to do on Petite Martinique:

  • Hike the Piton
  • The Whitsuntide Regatta
  • Snorkelling
  • Water sports

Tobago

I wrote a whole blog post about this beautiful island. You can check it out here!

If you do happen to visit any of these islands, please do let me know!
