I’m not even gonna bother coming up with an excuse for my absence, just know that I’m sorry init 😭

 

So recently I made a musical discovery, for as long as I can remember One More Night has been a Busy Signal song. Then recently I was driving home and the opening lyrics to the song came on but it wasn’t Busy singing??? It was (the legendary) Phil Collins.

This isn’t the first time this has happened to me but it was definitely the most rattling loool. Turns out Mr Collins released his tune in the 1980s, crazy scenes man.

 

But then this got me thinking, how many more songs have Jamaican artists taken and made their own? So here we have my list of favourite non-Jamaican, reggae & dancehall songs.

 

Lets start with one of my favourite artists, Sean (Shonda) Paul (Somigosolem!). In 2002 he released the hit song I’m Still In Love with You. He sampled it from Marcia Aitken’s 1977 song which was in fact a cover of a 1967 song by Alton Ellis. Sean Paul’s version is of course the best but here’s the original anyway;

 

UB40 aren’t Jamaican but I had to include this one. Turns out the song Red Red Wine was originally written and sang by Neil Diamond in 1967 and then three covers later we ended up with the 1982 UB40 version we know and love.

 

I don’t even have an intro for  this one. Busy Signal strikes again

 

We all remember Lorde’s Royals. Well in 2014 Demarco decided to remix it and it’s definitely better than the original!

 

All of Me is one of the loveliest songs ever. John Legend really knew what he was doing with this song. But in 2014, Demarco released his version and made the song sound even more beautiful.

 

 

It would be a tragedy if I didn’t include my favourite song ever. In 2011 Vybz Kartel and Spice released Romping Shop, sampling Ne-Yo’s Miss Independent and honestly it’s one of the greatest things ever! It’s gotten to the point where whenever I hear the opening notes, if Ne-Yo’s voice appears next I’m very disappointed. Enjoy!
