SOMIGOSOLEM; A tribute to Sean Paul

Before we start, quick update from last month’s post

NHC is cancelled lads 😦

I’m currently very heartbroken but the show must go on!

Greetings!

I know I’m meant to post on the first of the month BUTTTT I decided to wait until today as it’s my birthday. And so in honour of my birthday I’ve decided to dedicate this post to one of my favourite artists in the world, MY (emphasis on the ‘my’, before people come to fight me) King Of Dancehall, the absolute legend that is… Sean Paul 🥳

I think it’s easy to not take Sean Paul seriously because of all the dancehall/pop songs he’s released over the years (that haven’t always been great) but even those can’t take away the fact that he’s been killing it since 2001. His catchy songs and creative music videos have made him a household name in Jamaica and beyond. He is the King of the Crossover!

So let’s get into it

Here are some of Sean Paul’s most successful songs and some of my personal favourites;

Sean Paul – Baby Girl

This is the song that started it all off. It’s super cute and you can tell he was definitely young when it came out. This song is important because it really shows how he progressed as an artist.

Sean Paul & Sasha – I’m Still in Love With You

I don’t even need to say much about this song, it speaks for itself. From the intro to the iconic coloured backgrounds in the video, this song is legendary. Although featured on the 2002 Dutty Rock album, the song wasn’t released as a single until late 2003. The song was an interpolation of Alton Ellis’ 1977 song I’m Still in Love With You Girl (check it out the original slaps too).

Sean Paul – Temperature

Where do I even begin with this one…. That clap is ICONIC. It was only Number 1 for a week buttt it spent 17 weeks in the Top 10 which is pretty impressive for a dancehall song. Anyone who doesn’t like this song is TERRIBLE vibes!

Sean Paul feat Alexis Jordan – Got 2 Luv U

Did someone say range??? Uncle Sean was in his pop bagggg with this one here! I don’t care what anyone says, this song was a banger. His ability to bring a Jamaican flare to cheesy pop is not something that should be overlooked.

Beyoncé ft Sean Paul – Baby Boy

Ok I know this isn’t his song technically but come on. How many of your favourite artists have a song this good with THE Beyoncé? Queen Bey knew that she had to get the best on this to add some flavour and boy did he do that.

Sean Paul feat Rihanna – Break it Off

I love it when two Islanders killing it in the game come together. It’s a shame they never filmed a video for this, I think it would’ve been fun!

Sean Paul – Infiltrate

I of course have to add in a serious throwback. Sean Paul used to really hold his own on riddims back in the day, and probably still could today if we’re being honest. Before anything he is a dancehall artist and that should never be forgotten

Stylo G feat Sean Paul & Spice – Dumpling Remix

Stylo G stays representing for British Jamaicans. The song was a banger before but Spice & Sean added an extra jenny seh kwa x

Sean Paul, Shaggy and Spice – Go Down Deh

I had to end with a 2021 song. This song is really blowing up. The amount of media coverage around the world its had so far is crazy. Not not to sound biased or anything but it’s definitely largely due to Sean being on the track

And that proves my point. His success cannot and should not be downplayed. I’m not saying it was him alone that put Jamaica and dancehall on the global stage, that’s a stretch but he absolutely has played a major role. He deserves all of his flowers!

Well that’s me done.

Happy birthday to me and all that jazz. I’m accepting gifts so feel free to drop me a message for my wishlist 💜

Until next time

HD x
